Dodge's New Anti-Theft Device Makes Stealing a Fast Dodge a Very Slow Process

Quite Literally.

Ever since Dodge launched its new and redesigned Charger and Challenger back lineup in 2015, their cars have become very sought-after cars to people everywhere, especially to those outside the law. Case and point, this video shows a criminal who stole a Challenger Hellcat and then outran the police and helicopters giving chase.

Dodge has admitted that their 2015 and newer V8 powered Chargers and Challengers have become very hot cars and now they have done something about it to make the process of stealing a high-performance Dodge painstakingly slow.

Dodge has announced a free new security software update that will be available for all 2015-present SRT (and 2019-present Scat Pack) Chargers and Challengers. When triggered it is basically limp-mode on steroids. The new security measure will add an encrypted 4-digit code that is supposed to thwart key-code spoof devices' ability to digitally copy a car's keyfob. When this security measure is triggered, it limits the engine to idle speed and nothing more. This means if someone attempts to steal a 797hp Hellcat Redeye, they will only be driving away with 2.8hp and 22lb-ft of torque which is about as much hp as my push-lawnmower. This is a far cry from its almost 800hp and 200+mph top speed.

Dodge says all its dealerships will be offering the feature by mid-2021.

  • Does that mean it’s not coming on then

  • if the car knows it's been stolen, why let it move at all?

    • Just to troll the thief

    • Really to give any thief a false sense of hope that they have gotten away with stealing the car, and if it’s a manual model, you can’t really stop the thief from putting the car in gear after getting it started.

  • I think this is a great idea, and it will hopefully be used in more Dodge branded vehicles to come.

    • It is a great idea and I think it should be used for many more high-end and performance vehicles.

  • Can you even move a Challenger or a Charger with 2.8 HP?

  • This takes common sense as well which cannot be controlled. Think about how many codes will just be 1234.

    • It could be a vehicle specific code picked by Dodge. Buyers might not choose the code.
