Does using a car in a game make me want it less in real life?
I recently read an article somewhere online saying how certain car manufacturers are no longer allowing their cars into games due to the fact that people would rather buy the car in game rather than in real life. This will apparently lead to a drop of car sales for the manufacturer, whether this is the case or not, it got me thinking about how valid this statement actually is.
I for one am a car enthusiast, obviously, as well as one that enjoys driving games and I can honestly say that I think that statement is ridiculous. I cannot understand how owning a virtual version of a vehicle could make one not want to own it in real life.
Forza is the reason I hope to one day purchase my very own Veloster N, and many other cars too
In driving games we are given the opportunity to experience many different vehicles and enjoy them in a virtual world where one can do absolutely anything they would like with the vehicle, whether that means ignoring the speed limits or taking a virtual Gallardo for a beach run, but can one ever get the satisfaction from a virtual Lamborghini that one would get from a real one? In my opinion, obviously not.
This was fun no doubt, but if anything it makes me want my own Gallardo in real life
Have you ever decided to purchase an extremely expensive car in a game and thought to yourself, 'Wow, now that I've driven this car in Forza I would never need to own it in real life!' No, of course not! Why? It's utterly ridiculous. If anything, driving that car in game would make one think, 'I hope that one day I'll be able to buy this car and experience it in real life!'
It's expensive, it's in a game, but I really want one
Gaming is actually a great way for manufacturers to advertise and show off their beautiful creations and deciding to remove them from games such as Forza or Need for Speed is definitely not going help increase sales of their real cars, if anything sales will drop due to people experiencing other virtual cars making people want to purchase them in real life.
