Don't put a car's gearbox in neutral or depress the clutch for a prolonged period of time when driving faster than running pace.
It's the engine's torque on the driven wheels that keeps the car going where you want it to. Disengage the engine from the wheels and they'll have a limited say on where the car is going. The car will then not or barely respond to steering input as you'd expect, making averting suddenly impossible. The car will just plough on in the direction it was going.
