Once at the top of the Stelvio Pass (drivetribe.com/p/driving-up-passo-stelvio-X92C7svsQbaGjqzRmH0Opg) you have a choice of staying in Italy and driving down to Bormio or heading north and into Switzerland via the Umbrail Pass.

Driving across the top with the deep snow all around seemed a little strange given that the day before we'd left a sunny and warm Venice.

The route we chose was to head into Switzerland and down the Umbrail.

Once we'd got the to bottom we headed over to Airolo at the base of the San Gottardo pass. On the way the SatNav took us over the Albula Pass. Unfortunately the video camera batteries were flat at this point which was a real shame as it was the best driving road of the day. Lovely narrow winding roads but very little traffic so I could relax and just drive.

Oh well. It's an excuse to go back I guess :D

  • The tree line part of the Umbrail looks a lot more fun downhill in light traffic than it did uphill in heavy traffic when I did it.

    • It was great fun going down. Some nice sweeping sections. It was a relief after getting stuck behind traffic going up the Stelvio.

    • Stelvio was miserable with traffic both ways for me, but downhill to Bormio was the best of the three.
