DriveTribe's Favourite W Series Moments so Far
With four races down, we pick the best moments so far.
W Series has provided us with some incredibly memorable moments so far in 2021. We here at DriveTribe thought we'd stick our heads together and see what our favourite ones are.
Thiemo Albers-Daly:
There have been a lot of great moments for me in W Series so far this year so it's tricky to choose just one! But I think Irina Sidorkova's second place podium in Austria in just her second race takes the biscuit for me. It was thoroughly deserved and perfectly demonstrates why we should watch her career with great interest.
Lottie Talks Cars:
I'll be honest, when the W-Series was first announced I thought it was a step backward for females in motorsport. I didn't understand why women had to have their own exclusive racing series. In karting and other single-seater series, you're not segregated by gender, you're expected to race against males, so why in this so-called 'F1 feeder series' were sexes being separated? I followed the W-Series in 2019 and I enjoyed it. I appreciated that women were finally being showcased on a mainstream level in motorsport.
But it was Channel 4's recent documentary that cemented my view on why the W-Series should be a permanent fixture. Motorsport is skewed towards men, that is a fact, and because of this, it can be hard for female talent to find sponsorship, attend testing days and employ an engineer for said testing days. But the W-Series takes that issue away, eliminating the financial barriers for women to enter the higher divisions of the sport. And having watched all the races this year, I'm amazed by the sheer talent of drivers such as Alice Powell, Jamie Chadwick, and Emma Kimiläinen.
So it's no surprise, that my highlight of the W-Series so far was watching the third round of racing at Silverstone in person. The quality of racing towards the front of the grid was superb. There was a great battle between Alice Powell and Fabienne Wohlwend that lasted most of the race and the midfield was so tightly packed, watching drivers side by side down the Wellington Straight was a real treat. But it was more so the crowd and atmosphere that made the experience. It was so heart warming to see the grandstands filled with fans cheering on the home favourites and appreciating such a high-quality race. It finally felt like women had a firm place in motorsport and that their talent was being recognised by a mass audience, regardless of their gender.

Kiran Ganesh"I haven't watched much of W series although Powell's Austria pole was awesome!"
Robert Percy:
James Allen as lead commentator for the first weekend in Austria because of Alex Jacques having to self-isolate. It was the best way to make lemonade out of lemons. Hearing James commentate on a Formula 1 weekend again was absolutely fantastic and I hope that W Series think about bringing him back if the circumstances allow.
Alice Powell's win at Silverstone. You could really tell how much it meant to her as a British driver winning on home soil and to her chances in the fight for the title.
Fabienne Wohlwend getting a podium in the first race. Fabienne is one of my favourite drivers and personalities in the W Series and to see her start off so well in the very first round of the championship was fantastic.
Ira Sidorkova's P2 finish in the second weekend in Austria. I wouldn't have expected her to be as good as she has been, but for such a young driver she has showed a hell of a lot of skill! I can easily see her going on to do really great things in motorsport if she has enough backing behind her.
Jesse Billington:
A quick word on W Series too. Favourite moments? Alice Powell taking a victory at home at Silverstone (which I saw from the grandstand at Copse #flex). Equally just watching another gripping title battle between Powell and defending champ Jamie Chadwick, two drivers proving their stellar on-track abilities giving us a title fight with a sole point in it.

A moment that was both monumental on and off the track for me was Sarah Moore's podium in the opening round at the Red Bull Ring and this has to be my favourite W Series moment so far. It was certainly a hard fought for second place finish as she managed to hold off Belen Garcia during the middle stage of the race.
Her first podium in the Championship has been an inspiration to many. Becoming the first openly LGBTQ+ driver to finish on the podium at a Grand Prix weekend, Sarah is a role model for the racing community and her achievements will hopefully inspire young people around the world.

I've thought the season so far to be very good with some good racing throughout most of the pack, I think my favourite bit though is that, after the delay since the first season in 2019, W Series is back and attracting an increasing audience.
Everybody liked that 🙌
