One year ago...

A little more than a year ago I fulfilled a dream I bought a 750i.
First a few details about the car, this is a 1991 750i 220kw 300PS the vehicle has 110,000km mileage.

Already at the first inspection of the car I found some issues. Apart from small things like the oil and brake fluid need to be changed and the rear brake pads need to be changed, there were a few more things on the list. In the right rear end the car had a parking bump and the passenger door had some rust that had to be removed. One of the fog lights was cracked and one of the light lenses was cracked as well. Then there was one more problem and that was the engine was a little oily down there. But apart from all that the car was extremely dirty.

Despite all this I bought the old V12 because it was actually the best I had seen for sale.

The first drive confirmed the good condition of the car, no rattles or other unusual noises. The ride is very comfortable. The first drive down the highway foot to the floor and you were much faster to 200km/h than any car I have ever owned. I ador this car with its magnificent V12 and i love drive it home for thevery first time .

Mending things

Arrived home with my new V12 i began mending it, at that time I had no carlift so I had to do everything with a jack.
After the car was properly washed the first thing I did was an oil change. After that it went on with the brakes and brake fluid, thereby a new problem arose all Ventilation valves could be opened except for one and that is the rear left. You could see the valve lives a hard life, maybe on the last service someone overdone things here a little bit, I tried it very carefully open it but then it broke. That was first no problem I ordered a new valve for the brake at Bmw. I Tried the broken off piece to get out, but that failed unfortunately. I had to get a new brake caliper which was not that easy. The 750i with its big heavy V12 needs big brakes the brakes in the front are very rare 4-piston brakes in the rear are calipers that were only available in the 750i and the M5 e34. So I had to find someone who sells parts from a 750i or a M5. Finally I found a used brake caliper in very good condition. New caliper installed and the mighty V12 was ready to go again. Now came the most expensive part the work I could not do myself body and paint. For this I got a replacement rear bumper with parking aid. The work on body and paint took very long because the company had a lot to do, painted were tailgate, side panel rear right, rear bumper. In addition, the passenger door was the lower part with rust generously cut out and reinserted. Then this door was also painted. This work cost me 1000€ which is very cheap.

After the paint and body work were completed I could now turn my attention to other things. I found that the air conditioning did not work and had this filled at the BMW dealer. I also replaced the defective headlight lenses. also i put a second radio inside the car bescause the orginal was broken but i don't want to miss it in the center console

Time to do a little more

A hint from me in the winter you can find summer tires far cheaper than in the summer. Therefore, I bought four beautiful original aluminum summer tires in the winter. Then there was one more thing I wanted to have, I bought parking sensors for front and rear because the car did not have them from the factory. I also wanted heated seats and power seats, so I bought two new seats and added heated seats to the original upholstery and pulled them onto the power seat frames.

Driving Daily?

No I do not drive the V12 daily it is for me a classic that I move only in particularly nice weather or on weekends. for everyday life I have further my 525i. Do not get me wrong I love this car but every time I drive this car I'm always a bit afraid that an idiot drives me in and there are unfortunately only a little less than 600 pieces in Germany.
The big V12 is very discreet and dignified car, the big sedan wants to cruise and not curve cutting. I love it with the car through the green country to drive my arm out of the firm to hang out, the car conjures me a permanent grin in the face.
The consumption of the V12 is on average between 15 and 19l per 100km, which is a lot but you have to consider that here 12 cylinders must be filled with gasoline.

To be onest

Things I don't like about my 750i. Number one the steering, it is the first car from BMW with servotronic, servotronic means at low speeds there is full servo support and the faster you go the less servo support there is.
This makes the steering feel a bit strange at times. Cold start - Since I haven't redone the intake manifold gasket yet, it doesn't pick up nicely when cold until the engine has about warmth and the gaskets have expanded. Suspension - The suspension is very comfortable which makes it a bit spongy in curves but that's just the consequence of driving a big old sedan, that's not sporty, even if at the time the 750i was the sportiest thing you could get in the luxury class. Spare parts - unfortunately you get worse and less spare parts for the car because it is too rare.

Money

So what doses my ownweship of my 750i cost me in one year.

CONCLUSION

I love this car and really can not find much to it what bothers me, yes the car is not efficient and certainly it is unnecessary for many and certainly not what most want but just for me this car has always been a dream. There are cars with better performance with more power more displacement and with more comfort or sportiness but I love this car just the way it is and what it stands for. I could look at the car all day and not fall in love with it every time.
Even after a year of owning the car I would not sell it.

  • Bravo for having the strength to drive a potentially wallet-imploding old luxo-barge!

  • So, basically the primary mechanical systems (engine, transmission, brakes, steering and HVAC) all are working basically like new, correct?

    • Not like new but there is no play in the bushings and the engine is a peace of cake. If you put a coin on top It runs so smooth the coin doesn’t fall over even if you rev the engine. For a 30 years old car this is pretty impressive.
