DRIVING_ROADS: NO. 3

Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria

Distance: 22 Miles
Road surface quality: 9.5/10
Rating: 9/10

Today, we have a good one. Moving completely away from the humble B Roads of Britain to one of the most glorious parts of the world. The Alps. And with the Grossglockner Pass being Austria's highest surfaced road, it is in my eyes the best place to soak up the beauty of Austria. Located in the South West of the country, the Grossglockner snakes from the state of Salzburg to Carinthia via Fuscher Törl and at its highest point reaching 8,215 ft it makes for one damn good drive.

Now I know its a toll road (at the unfortunate cost of €36!) which can cause at times an huge amount of tourists going up in camper vans, but if you get the time of day right it's basically empty. And when it's empty, you have driving heaven all to yourself. You go from fast flowing stretches to tight and negotiating hairpins and at the summit snow is waiting for you, always... But this road has one of the best bonuses a great road can offer. Tunnels. Long, low level tunnels which gives this road an amazing soundtrack making this incredible pieces of tarmac one of the best Europe has to offer. And if your curious, yes it does have a café along the way.
