DT India's Car of the Year: Vote for your favourite Luxury Saloon
What's been the best 80 Lakhs - plus luxury saloon in India this year?
As part of Drivetribe India's ambitious but not-at-all-rubbish series of posts to find out the car of the year that's been launched in India, I'll be telling you about the luxury saloons. It's Germany vs Italy vs Britain over here, with BMW launching the super quick M5 Competition and their main man - the 7 Series, Maserati giving us the 2019 Quattroporte and Jaguar bringing the XJ50 early in the year.
BMW M5 Competition
We all love an M5. But BMW decided to make it even cooler. This one is a larger, more luxurious version of it, but has a monster 625 horsepower twin-turbo 4.4 litre V8, which makes it accelerate from 0-100 kph in just 3.3 seconds! That's deep inside supercar area. It can be driven in 4WD, 4WD Sport - for some good track action and 2WD, for POWERSLIIIDESSSS!!! The interior has a heads up display and some really cool BMW tech too, and is a sensible daily driver in Comfort mode. They've managed to make the M5 even better, how's that possible!
Win-win for BMW.
If you have around ₹1.55 Crore (USD $217,400) lying around in the drawer somewhere, buy this. Because this surely won't be just lying around.
BMW 7 Series
Designers: So do you want the front grille to be big or...?
Obviously there were lots of memes about the 7 Series this year, but it's a brilliant car. It just has all the features you would want in a luxury saloon, and much more. And, it has a V12! 610 horsepower is enough for you if you have almost a house inside the car right? Of course you'll have a driver when you buy a 7 Series because you will want to relax in the ultra-comfy seats. But surely, the driver will have huge fun driving it. Very good contender.
The grille actually doesn't look so big...
Prices range at 1.2-2.4 crore (USD $168,310-336,620), depending on whether you want the 730Ld or the ultimate machine, the M760Li.
We know the old Quattroporte is a hitman's getaway car, but this new one is for anyone who can afford it. It's luxurious, looks stylish and has what's called Ermenegildo Zegna silk along with soft leather, in the interior. Maserati has given all the options you need, it is easy to use and comes with either a 3 Litre Turbo V6, or a 3.8 Litre Twin-turbo V8, both made by Ferrari. It really is for anyone who likes to travel in style and be unique.
It will definitely grab some attention.
It is priced at ₹1.71-2.58 crore (USD $239,841-361,866) and although it is expensive, it will give you a lot more attention than the regular Mercs, BMWs and Audis.
Let's begin with the most important fact of them all - it's a Jaaaag. Designed for celebrating its 50th anniversary, it has all the luxury you could have wanted. But what's the highlight here? It has the very rare feature of being able to see all around you. 360° surround cameras is a beautiful feature, especially if you're driving in the crowded streets of India with your new and shining luxury saloon. Good on you, Jaguar.
Just looks exactly the way it should.
It is priced at ₹1.11 Crore (USD $155,686), so it is relatively cheaper compared to its competitors. A very strong car of the year contender.
