Dunlop Debate: Predictions for the Nürburgring Grand Prix
Thiemo Vs Kiran - can we agree on anything?
Ahead of the German Grand Prix this weekend, Kiran Ganesh and I thought we'd put our heads together and make some predictions about it. Seeing as we don't often seem to agree on much when talking about Formula 1, we thought this would be a fun thing to do and for you to witness. So for this first edition, we thought we'd keep it simple - here's what we came up with.
Who's going to be on pole position ahead of the race?
Lewis Hamilton - With eight out of ten pole positions to his name so far this season, this one seems to be a bit of a no-brainer to me. He just finds speed in places nobody else can and manages to pull it out of the bag at the last second to steal it away from someone else.
Valtteri Bottas for pole. Valtteri Bottas is on form and he will continue to be on form. He knows he has nothing to lose now that Verstappen is far behind in the title. Porridge power pole position coming.
Who's making it onto the podium this weekend?
The Nürburgring is always an interesting place to go racing, with plenty of drama taking place there over the years. Despite this, I think Hamilton will still win the race. But for second place, I'm going to say Max Verstappen because you can never count him out and for third, I'm going to be a little hopeful and say Ricciardo. He's been really close to getting onto the podium recently and if anyone can do it, it's him. Plus I really want to see Cyril get that tattoo.
Hamilton will probably have some sort of problem in the race and finish outside the podium, making Bottas win easily. Max will have a lonely race again and come second and Perez will take the scraps to finish 3rd.
The junior formula took to the track again for a two day testing session.
Which driver will get the fastest lap?
Bottas seems to like going for the fastest lap and has managed to get it twice this year so far. If he can't get onto the podium (which would help my Ricciardo getting third prediction) then I think he'll settle for fastest lap and make a charge for it towards the end of the race.
Ricciardo will get the fastest lap on the last lap, like in Belgium!
Bold Prediction for the weekend:
George Russell (and Williams) get their first points of the year this weekend. There's been plenty of drama this year and if there's mixed conditions in Germany, then I reckon Williams could capitalize on this. It's a just the right level in terms of a bold prediction because you can still see it happening.
Extremely bold prediction of the weekend - Callum Illot will be the fastest Haas in FP1. 😬
