For those looking for a small car with lightning pace and an upmarket image, Audi South Africa's S1 makes a very strong case. It’s a true premium offering in the hot-hatchback class, with the MINI John Cooper Works as its most direct performance rival. The Audi S1 is based on the A1, and rides on the same PQ25 platform as the 5th-gen Volkswagen Polo. The S1 isn’t cheap, though. It might be roughly the same size as a Ford Fiesta ST, but it’s priced in line with larger hot hatches - such as the Ford Focus ST and the Renault Megane RS. And unlike almost all of Audi's other S models, the S1 gets a manual gearbox as standard – and that's the only option. No auto is offered. While the Polo GTI makes do with a 1.8 TFSI motor, the S1 has an EA888 2.0 TFSI under its hood, with quattro permanent all-wheel drive system transfers engine power to all four wheels. With a hefty 170kw/370nm it boasts even more power than a Volkswagen Golf GTI and a 0-100kph time of just 6.2 seconds. The #AudiS1 is priced at R499 000 for the 3-dr and R506 500 for the 5-door Sportback. #TunedAutomotive #SomeShitAboutCars
