Elon Musk confirms he is sending his own Tesla Roadster into space
No seriously, this Tesla Roadster is going where there are no charging points or roads........
Later today SpaceX will launch its Falcon Heavy rocket for the very first time in what has been a year in the making historical event. And as promised, Elon Musk is sending his old Tesla Roadster along with a passenger for the billion-year orbit into space.
The lucky passenger is nicknamed ‘Starman’ and is a dummy astronaut wearing a new SpaceX spacesuit because when you’re a tech billionaire, this is what you do for fun. Musk shared new images of the cargo on his Instagram showing his own Tesla Roadster being ‘driven’ by ‘Starman.’
While some will see this as a waste of a perfectly good car all in the name of PR. Reading between the lines, it is a massive make or break moment for SpaceX as they attempt to prove the ability of the Falcon Heavy rocket while giving its spacesuit a rigorous test in an actual space enviroment. Assuming the launch is successful; SpaceX will then safely attempt to land the trio of rocket boosters so they can be used again on future launches.
The car and its ‘driver’ will be loaded aboard the Falcon Heavy nosecone before being launched into the stratosphere where it appears to have been fitted with bonnet mounted cameras, possibly giving the world the very first space driving footage ever shot.
The Falcon Heavy rocket will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 1:30 pm Eastern Time, carrying the Roadster all the way to Mars while playing David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” on repeat until the batteries die, and no we didn’t make that last part up.
So, is the Tesla Roadster going where there are no roads the next giant leap for mankind? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
