Elon Musk sets Model S price to $69,420 for the meme
Interesting choice of numbers there, Musk.
A few hours earlier, Tesla's American rival EV company, Lucid, revealed their pricing for the upcoming Model S competitor, the Lucid Air. Set at a base price of $77,400 USD, it has been announced that buyers will be able to qualify for a $7,500 USD tax credit, essentially dragging the cost of the car down to $69,900 - undercutting the base price for Tesla's Model S.
Now... Elon Musk, founder and owner of Tesla Motors, can't take that of course - and almost immediately after announcing a price drop on the base Model S earlier this week from $74,990 to $71,990, Tesla has further reduced the price, this time down a suspiciously suggestive $69,420 USD.
As stated in the tweet, Musk announces that "the gauntlet has been thrown down", indicating that his response is aimed indirectly at Lucid's attempt to undercut Tesla's prices... And he's obviously seen an opportunity to get creative with the pricing, because if the set of numbers fail to display an implicit meaning to you, then you've clearly been living in the distant past (or future, i dunno).
The community of Tesla owners, buyers and enthusiasts are quite split on whether this new pricing is a hilarious publicity stunt or a boring overdone joke. What do you think?
