EuroNASCAR: Advait Deodhar scores maiden podium in Race 1 at Brands Hatch
The Indian got his first outright podium in EuroNASCAR in Race 1.
For Round 3 of the 2019 Euro NASCAR series, Advait Deodhar had his third change of teams as he took over the #31 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS in the Elite 2 category to race at his current home event at Brands Hatch in the United Kingdom.
Deodhar started the weekend finishing 13th in the lone practice, where he was the seventh best rookie. Along with many others, he had four of his lap times deleted due to track limits. It ended up being his best qualifying as he made it into Super Pole for the first time.
He was 10th in Qualifying 1 to make it into Super Pole where he finished a solid eighth overall and was the fifth best rookie - while driving a car which he only got used to for the first time this weekend in a new team environment.
It was a slower start from Deodhar in Race 1 on Saturday at Brand Hatch with the Indian dropping one place in ninth overall. He was up to sixth by the time a safety car period was underway on Lap 11. He gained a place on re-start to be fifth then.
A penalty to a rival moved him to fourth but he lost out to #66 Chevrolet to drop back to fifth. He was back in fourth after an off for a front runner and he was quickly up to third after the leader slowed down on the final lap to finish on the podium.
It was a good finish eventually after a post-race penalty helped him to secure second behind #66 Chevrolet with #32 Chevrolet rounding off the Top 3 positions. He was also the second best rookie. "This is technically my second home race as I live in London,” said Deodhar.
"CAAL Racing was the third team for me in this season. They are amazing, I’m so happy, I don’t know what to say. It was a crazy race right from the beginning. I am sure the spectators enjoyed it as well. It was a funny race for a driver and it was going crazy until the very last lap.”
Deodhar made a steady start in Race 2 on Sunday as he remained sixth in the opening sequence. There was a big fight ahead of Deodhar and he gained a place to fifth midway in the race when the safety car was deployed for an incident behind.
The re-start worked well for Deodhar as he gained a place to fourth but by the end of the lap he lost it to drop to fifth and eventually to sixth when he went slightly wide at the start of the next lap. He finished in the same position in the end and was fifth best rookie.
At the front though, #66 Chevrolet made it a double in the weekend with #24 Chevrolet in second ahead of #50 Ford Mustang. With three rounds done, Deodhar has gained positions to be third in the drivers' standings with 172 points, 24 down on the leader.
It could still be a double Top 5 finish pending the outcome of the appeal.
The Indian scored good points in the championship bid.
