EV West to release electric "crate motor," with LS motor mounts

For just $30,000 EV West will sell you a Tesla motor fitted with LS motor mounts, to make your EV-hot rodding experience just that much easier

The term LS stands for "Luxury Sport," and it's a name that's often attributed to a series of high-power, high-displacement naturally-aspirated V8 engines.

The goal being to produce a powerplant that delivers high-power at low-cost but with great reliability. The LS quickly became a favorite of tuners and drag racers everywhere, for just those reasons. Cheap, fast, reliable performance is what you'd want out of an engine swap, and GM gave us just that with the LS.

But now, there's a challenger, and it's not quite what you'd expect.

EV West is fairly well-known in the car community as a company that often converts old VW Beetles and early Porsche 911s into somewhat acceptable EVs.

The company recently announced on Facebook that they would soon be selling a "Tesla crate motor," and best of all, it'll be fitted with brackets that will slide right onto the mounts for a Chevy LS or a small-block V8.

Seeing as Tesla doesn't exactly sell brand-new motors to anyone who isn't a service center, EV West gets these things from wrecked Teslas and then refurbishes them before sale.

The new 'crate motor' is set to roll out in a few months and will reportedly be sold for $30,000 with the inverter included. And before you scoff at the price, bear in mind that an EV West hot rod with a similar setup recently hit just under 240 mph at Bonneville!

But what's fascinating here is that LS motor mounts' inclusion means that this kit will work with any aftermarket LS adapter plate, opening up the world of EV-hot rodding to just about anybody with some spare cash lying around.
