Automakers are falling inline to the inevitable demise of the internal combustion engine and now it's AMGs face the reality of the situation that electric cars are the only way for cars to progress in the future. Being a a manufacturer that is known for making beefy V8 engines that are power hungry then this requires a complete overhaul but luckily the were ahead of the game and have been working on perfecting electric cars since the SLS E-Cell was born.

Autocar spoke to Drummond Jacoy, Mercedes AMG's Director of Vehicle Development who had a few words to say about the situation. “It’s obvious we’re not going to make the world happy with V8s for the next 200 years, and AMG has shown in the past, with the electric SLS years ago, that is has the capabilities in all-electric drive. That was a very impressive vehicle for its time and we’ve nurtured that technology and the learning we have from hybrid vehicles.”

The AMG department have already started reducing displacement and replacing it with forced induction by swapping out the naturally aspirated V8s and bringing in a four cylinder turbo-charged engine in a bid to reduce emissions making an all electric vehicle the inevitable forward step.

Jacoy said “As soon as Mercedes starts a car, we’ll look at what we can do". He then goes on to say "We’ll have to reinvent ourselves there [with electric cars], obviously, because the sound of a V8 is not going to be there if it’s a pure-electric vehicle. It’s not starting from scratch, but we’re going to have to look at what the AMG story is with an electric vehicle. But we’re working on that".
