F1 chiefs approve front and rear wing changes for 2019 to improve overtaking
The FIA hopes the changes will have a 'positive' impact on racing.
Following an e-vote, the regulation changes for the 2019 Formula 1 season has been approved in order to boost closer racing and overtaking opportunities for the drivers on track. The current formula has made life difficult with drivers complaining hugely of the dirty air.
It has made following the car in front much more tougher which in turn has raised the level of difficulty in overtaking even with the help of DRS. The proposed changes were almost put down when initially there was no unanimous conclusion.
But a last-minute voting on April 30 - despite there not being a unanimous vote - the changes has been approved by the Strategy Group, F1 Commission and the World Motor Sport Council. One of the key changes is the simplification of the front wings.
The complexity of the front wing over the years has been one of the biggest issues, coupled with the rear wing - which will now be wider and deeper. The changes has also called for a simplified brake duct with no winglets.
The governing body hopes the changes which were worked upon by the team under Ross Brawn will bring 'positive' impact in closer racing and improve the chances of overtaking, with further work to continue to bolster racing in future.
Full FIA statement:
"Following a presentation made to the F1 teams at the Bahrain Grand Prix regarding proposals aimed at promoting closer racing and more overtaking in the Formula 1 World Championship, the Strategy Group, the F1 Commission and the World Motor Sport Council today approved a number of regulation changes for the 2019 season.
The changes, approved by e-vote, are as follows:
- Simplified front wing, with a larger span, and low outwash potential
- Simplified front brake duct with no winglets
- Wider and deeper rear wing
"Today’s vote follows an intense period of research into the FIA’s initial proposals, which were made with the support of the F1 Commercial Rights Holder, conducted by a majority of the F1 teams. These studies indicated the strong likelihood of a positive impact on racing and overtaking within F1 and as such have now been ratified for implementation in 2019.
" The approved changes are separate to the ongoing work being undertaken in regard to defining Formula 1’s regulations for 2021 and beyond. In addition to the aerodynamic changes ratified today, the FIA is continuing to evaluate a range of other measures aimed at encouraging closer racing and boosting overtaking in F1."

Hi congratulations - your post has been selected by DriveTribe F1 Ambassador for promotion on the DriveTribe homepage.
What F1 needs is 3 basic things:
1) PUs simplicity: more noise, less hi-tech components and more raw power, not some extra boost or something...
2) less aero packs: the package nowdays resembles some spacecraft out of the 80's movies. And that makes no sense at all. What we need is more speed, more overtakes and, with those in place, more emotion and with that comes more racing adrenaline, and crashes. That's what this goes for: crashes. And RIC-style overtakes.
3) more constructers, especially works teams.
Its a simple and efective thing to do. And we all sign up for this. Please, bring back the V10s and V12s...
