F1 fan arrested at gunpoint mistaken for mafia boss
A Formula 1 fan atending the Dutch Grand Prix was arrested at gunpoint after police mistook him for a mafia boss.
A 54 year old, named only as Mark L from Liverpool, was blindfolded and led away from a restaurant by armed police on the weekend of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
Local police reportedly thought they had caught long sought after Sicilian crime lord Matteo Messina Denaro - responsible for the murder of 10 people in 1993 bombings in which a further 93 were injured.
A Public Prosecutor's Office statement said that Mark L "stated he was an English citizen and not the person claimed by Italy."
Italy had issued the Dutch police with a European Arrest Warrant in what appears to be a high profile case of mistaken intelligence.
The public prosecutor subsequently issued a release order later the same day.
