Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon had to be separated after the Brazilian Grand Prix following a collision between the two that cost the Red Bull driver a likely victory.

Ocon was attempting to unlap himself on the run to Turn 1 as Verstappen led, with the Force India going around the outside but not getting the move done cleanly. As Verstappen turned in for Turn 2, Ocon hit the right rear of the Red Bull, spinning both cars and promoting Lewis Hamilton back into the lead.

Verstappen had climbed through the field from fifth on the grid to lead comfortably once ahead of Hamilton, but damage to the floor of his car in the collision meant he was unable to get close enough to regain the position in the closing laps, finishing 1.4s behind Hamilton at the checkered flag.

Calling Ocon “a f***ing idiot” during the race and raising his middle finger as he recovered from the contact, Verstappen then sought out the Frenchman in the FIA weigh room and confronted him before pushing Ocon repeatedly.

Ocon stood his ground before being pushed off the scales, before moving back towards Verstappen after a further shove, with two FIA delegates stepping in to prevent any further contact as Verstappen eventually walked away.

Ocon — who beat Verstappen to the European Formula 3 title in 2014 — received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for the incident during the race, finishing comfortably outside the points.
