F2 & F3 News: Driver Announcements

Rookies take to the grid and old faces return for 2021.

“I’m extremely excited to be staying in F2 and with Carlin for 2021,”

Jehan Daruvala

Jehan Daruvala and Carlin have announced that he will be driving for the team again in the upcoming 2021 season.

Daruvala made the step up to Formula 2 with Carlin in 2020 on the back of a title contending season in Formula 3. The Indian took two podiums last year which included a dream end to the season as he won the Sakhir Sprint Race at the final round of the season.

Elsewhere in Formula 2, Hitech have announced both of their drivers for the 2021 season. They've signed the two Red Bull Junior drivers of Juri Vips and Liam Lawson with the latter making the step up into Formula 2 after a solid season in Formula 3 last year where he finished fifth overall.

Vips returns to the team after a year away, having taken fourth in F3 with them in 2019 on the back of three wins and four podiums. The Estonian driver made his F2 debut last season, competing in three rounds in place of Sean Gelael, who had suffered a back injury, following the Spanish round of racing. Vips scored 16 points overall during his stint with DAMS, including a podium finish, and will now make the step up full-time.

“With the success the team has had in previous years, I hope I can achieve the same results and fight at the front of the field.”

Jak Crawford

Meanwhile, over in Formula 3, Hitech have also announced their driver line-up - and it's another two Red Bull junior drivers! Signing the rookie pairing of Jak Crawford and Ayumu Iwasa for the new campaign, it will be a completely new line-up for the team.

Crawford – who will turn 16 in May – steps up on the back of finishing second in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship. Iwasa makes the move after winning the French Formula 4 Championship, with a tally of nine wins, 15 podiums and five pole positions.

It will be interesting to see how the rookie pairing get on this year.

Over at PREMA, Olli Cadwell has been announced as one of their drivers for the 2021 campaign. He is the final piece of the PREMA puzzle as he joins Arthur Leclerc and Dennis Hauger at the team.

Caldwell has previous experience with the Italian outfit, taking four poles and four wins in the 2018 Italian Formula 4 Championship. The 18-year-old remained with PREMA in the 2019 Formula Regional European Championship, where he took seven podiums and one win.

Finally, Carlin have announced - you guessed it - a Red Bull junior driver as one of their two drivers this year. Johnny Edgar makes the step up for the 2021 Formula 3 campaign. after a successful year in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship. The Red Bull junior took six wins and five podiums on his way to the title, beating freshly confirmed 2020 Hitech racer Jak Crawford to the crown by two points.

The British driver dovetailed his title-winning season alongside a successful programme in Italian F4, where he took a further six podiums and two wins. Not bad.

  • Daravula, Vips and Caldwell will be the ones to watch - on another note, if you are a current Red Bull affiliated driver you've obviously not got too long to prove yourself with all these young drivers in the stable - I wonder what they are going to do with them all...
