Fernando Alonso rolls his Dakar Rally Toyota Racing truck and keeps on racing
After winning LeMans with Toyota, former two time Formula1 World Champion Fernando Alonso stuck with the team for the 2020 Dakar Rally held in Saudi Arabia. For Alonso, this race has not gone much to plan.
In the second stage of the race, Alonso has already smashed the suspension of the Dakar race ready Toyota Hilux and that dropped him and his co-driver Marc Coma down to 11th place, 154 minutes behind the race leader.
Yesterday, it got worse, two miles into the stage he went up a sand dune, locked his brakes, went sideways at the top of the dune and rolled his Hilux twice all the way down. Surprisingly the Hilux landed and stopped on the wheels. Alonso and Coma being in good condition fired the truck back up, popped it into gear and off he went back to racing.
This tumble took 68 mins to fix, dropping them further back to 14th place. To continue racing, Alonso and Coma had to kick out the windshield to see where they were going.
This might be a very entertaining video to watch but, in the past crashes in the Dakar rally have claimed lives.
Currently, Carlos Sainz, father of Formula1 driver Carlos Saintz Jr. is leading the race with two stages left, he is 57 years old and has won Dakar twice before and is a two time World Rally Champion. That is one efficient driver.
