Fernando Alonso shows off rallying skills in Toyota GR Yaris
After unveiling its rally-inspired GR Yaris hot-hatch, Toyota organised what may be one of the coolest press events in motoring history. The European branch of the Japanese team shipped a fleet of its latest creation to Circuito do Estoril in Portugal along with a couple of its most famous factory drivers.
Alongside rally ace, Kris Meeke and FIA WEC champion Jose Maria Lopez was the one and only Fernando Alonso who is now known for so much more than his near 20-year stint in Formula One.
Although the diverse driver has taken part in a plethora of motorsport disciplines including the Dakar rally, traditional rallying is something that is missing from his resume. That being said, it sounds like he very much enjoyed testing the car that according to Toyota was “Born from WRC.”
Since the Spaniard left Formula One, a lot of his racing opportunities have come thanks to Toyota. In fact, he drove a TS050 LMP1 car to victory at Le Mans and took on the challenging Dakar in a modified Hilux. With this recent appearance in yet another Toyota-built car, the rumour mill has been churning out a few gems.
One theory surrounding the event is that Alonso was there to get a feel for the car that plays a large role in the development of the 2021 Toyota WRC car. In fact, if Fernando enjoys driving it, there may be a chance of him competing in the top class of international rallying.
