He owns a 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo and a 250 Lusso Competizione and yet the management at Ferrari don't approve

If you're into your car-based Instagramming, you've probably heard of David Lee. The Californian jewellery entrepreneur (i.e. ferraricollector_davidlee) is a powerful force on the platform thanks to owning one of the most impressive collections of classic and modern Ferraris in the world.

Due to the Prancing Horse's strict policies when it comes to dishing out its limited edition supercars, you have to be deep in bed with the company to even be in the conversation to receive an invite to its automotive elite. The latest car to be released to a bunch of lucky customers has been the LaFerrari Aperta - the convertible variant of the company's halo car.

Yet despite David Lee owning every Ferrari worth knowing about (including an ex-Schumacher F1 car), he has not been placed on the list for the 200 Apertas, much to his disgust. So why has Ferrari said no?

Although they have not explicitly told anyone (including Lee) what the definitive reasoning has been for his rejection, sources close to the brand have a pretty good idea. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, it turns out his denial is probably down to his online presence.

David Lee is very flamboyant when it comes to showing off his collection and posts daily Instagram pictures of his beloved cars along with his obvious association with seriously expensive watches. And a source has said “The factory doesn’t like the publicity he creates, they hate all the noise, and he loves all the noise”.

Lee has replied to the article written by the LA Times, seen on his Instagram through the link below:

So he seems to be fairly humble about the whole thing, downplaying his apparent 'at-all-costs' attitude. But somehow I believe inside he'll be writhing at the fact that all his blatant publicity hasn't managed to please the bosses at Ferrari. And anyway, does an instagram handle get any more pretentious than that?

  • i dont really think its because of his social media presence, there are others who post their Ferraris regulary on Instagram too and they got Apertas..maybe its just because Ferrari wants to spread it a bit so not always the same 200-400 people get the limited cars. They have probably 10 000 other customers that have bought more than 1-2 cars and i think Ferrari wants to give others the chance too to get one now and then...

  • I love it, D_TRB throwing a little salt on D.Lee wounds with Gordon Ramsay's Aperta

  • I think it also has something to with the fact he was involved in a little "scandal or rix" with Salomondrin, where he apparently tricked him into selling his Huyra to him, and then breaking some "moral agreement" they had between each other. That made the internet headline, and perhaps perhaps Ferrari doesn't want this kind of association.
