Ferrari has retained the services of Kimi Raikkonen for another Formula 1 season in 2018, with a one-year extension on its current contract.

The statement from the Italian squad stated: "Ferrari announces that Scuderia Ferrari has renewed its technical and racing agreement with Kimi Raikkonen.

"The Finnish driver will therefore race for the Maranello team in the 2018 Formula One World Championship."

The 2007 F1 champion joined Ferrari in 2014 for the second time in his career and has since finished 12th, fourth, sixth respectively, while currently sits fifth in the 2017 standings - accumulating 11 podium finishes.

Raikkonen's teammate is yet to be confirmed, with four-time champion Sebastian Vettel the clear favourite to remain part of the Maranello-based outfit.

The Finnish driver's position was questioned arguably by many in the paddock, as well as the general masses, with fans and pundits alike urging for a young drivers like Antonio Giovinazzi and or Charles Leclerc to be given the chance - but it was highly unlikely on Ferrari's part, given its cautious approach over the years.

  • yeah, I know what you all think; he's not as fast as before, he should retire and drive karts with his son... But, man I'm glad to see him in red for one more season! there are many fast drivers on the grid, but there's just one KIMI. Who knows, maybe his bad luck will retire at the end of THIS season!

  • Good....F1 needs characters like Kimi! He could also surprise, like he did with Renault, when not too many people expected him to do. Forza Kimi!

  • Leclerc can wait for Kimi's place for one season in Sauber cockpit. That was also Kimi's starting place in F1...
