Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

​Apologies for being late with my second post. College life takes its toll on punctuality. Anyway, for the second post of my blog, I decided to go with what I think is the most underrated Ferrari of all time. The F12 Berlinetta. Released at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the F12 served as a replacement for the 599 GTB and as a competitor to the wild Lamborghini Aventador(next post is about this one by the way). Being the last Ferrari to be designed by Pininfarina, I fell head over heels in love with the F12's design the moment I saw it. The aggressive front end, the functional and minimalistic side profile, and the simple rear end. Design-wise, this car was the exact opposite of the Aventador. While the Aventador was all about space-age design with its scissor doors and plethora of vents, the F12 was highly minimalistic with conventional intakes and regular doors. The F12 wasn't as glamorous as the Lambo yet it still looked equally beautiful. This was Pininfarina's magic, and Ferrari decided to go ahead and throw it all away. The way I see it, the F12 is the most beautiful modern Ferrari, even more so in the Emerald Green shade and gold wheels in the attached pictures. The newer Ferraris such as the 812 and the F8 just look like cheap rip-offs of their predecessors in my opinion(the Roma is an improvement though, that's for sure). Coming to the mechanicals, the F12 was powered by a 6.3 litre naturally aspirated V12. It's the same engine that was used in the 599, but in the F12, it develops earth-crushing figures of 730 hp and 690 Nm of torque. Accompanying this exhilarating rush of power is a godly exhaust symphony that puts today's F1 cars to shame. The F12 had such a wide range of noises, it was as if the engine contained an entire Alan Silvestri orchestra. At startup, the engine is pretty quiet for a supercar engine. As you set off, it grumbles deeply till you reach about 3000 rpm when the orchestra starts building to the peak with a loud and consistent baritone that would remind you of the V12 F1 cars from the 90s all the way up to 6000 rpm when the full brunt of that 730 hp kicks in and takes you to an astonishing 9000 rpm while screaming like a banshee, at which point you upshift and the cycle repeats again and again till you're either in jail or wrapped around a tree. I joke of course, but the noise and the acceleration of the F12 are so addictive that I'd definitely risk going to jail if I ever got to drive one. The F12 went on to a top speed of 339 kph, which was 10 kph or so less than the Aventador, but it really doesn't matter unless you drive on the Autobahn everyday. It's the sensation that matters, and the sensation the F12 gave was completely different from the Aventador. It had more power, less weight, a dual-clutch gearbox, and most terrifying of all, it was rear-wheel drive. This made the F12 a complete animal in the corners, darting left or right with the slightest rotation of the steering wheel. The power from the engine was very immediate too, so anything more than quarter throttle would have it sliding about like a madman. And that's where the flaw in this car lies. It's a sensory overload. Its limits are so far beyond regular driving capabilities that you'd have to be a racing driver to properly enjoy it. It's perfection dialed up to the point that it's overwhelming. Jeremy Clarkson, the advocate of power himself if there ever was one, stated that this car would be much better with less power. This should give you an idea of how fast this car really is. All complaints aside though, the F12 is not only one of the greatest Ferraris, but also one of the greatest cars in history. It's a car that undoubtedly requires a lot of experience to drive, but even in the hands of an amateur it would deliver a sensation that one would never forget in his/her life. If I ever come round to buying one(which I obviously will if I acquire the resources), it'll be the one in the picture, no matter the cost.
