Ferrari releases new Portofino M with more HP and new gearbox
Redesigned engine, new 8-speed gearbox, and Race mode. What more do you need?
Coming in from a temporary hiatus from COVID, Ferrari is back to business and happy to announce the new Ferrari Portofino M.
The M isn't some BMW cooperative deal, the M actually stands for "Modificata". Ferrari says the name comes from the fact that it has undergone an evolution that has significantly boosted their performance - i.e. a modification hense the name.
The Portofino M has three main points Ferrari wants to brag about. It has a redesigned powertrain, a new eight-speed transmission and the five-position Manettino that includes a Race mode.
The V8 engine gets a power bump to bring it to 611 horsepower. (20 more than the "base" Portofino) To make this magical 20 hp happen, Ferrari engineers used new cam profiles to increase valve lift and optimise combustion chamber filling. The engineers also added a speed sensor to the turbocharger to increase the max revolutions per minute by 5000 rpm.
For the gearbox, the Portofino M gets an extra gear over the old 7-speed. Though an 8-speed, it is still different than its cousin SF90 Stradale’s 8-speed, because it has longer gear ratios and a mechanical reverse gear. It is equipped with a new clutch module which is 20% smaller while being able to give you 35% more torque.
Finally, that Race mode they want you to know about. The five-position Manettino is a first on a Ferrari offering GT spider. The Portofino M gets a Wet, Comfort, Sport, Race, and ESC-Off.
