Braking upgrades for FG Falcon
When the FG Falcon series was introduced in 2008, it was without a doubt some of the best product Ford had ever produced locally. In particular, the XR6 represented a happy medium in the range, somewhere between FPV excitement and base model boredom. There was no doubt about it, the FG four-door sedan had great lines and nicely balanced proportions, with added body kit enhancements the XR6 certainly looked the part. The XR range not only offers the driver better looks and increased performance, but there is also that element of street credibility.
The FG XR6, was the entry model into the XR range, which if you have the money and want the power, you can easily spec up to the very desirable XR6 Turbo or XR8. Ford’s 4.0-litre, six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine in the XR6 saw peak power of 195kW and torque at 391Nm. Those numbers aren't bad, but if you really want to get the pulse going, then the XR6 Turbo leaps up to 270kW and 533Nm, which is enough to satisfy the most discerning petrol head.
The XR6 Turbo translates into a fast and powerful sedan that is almost sedate when driving around town, but when the throttle is pressed hard, the power from the Barra engine can become addictive. The 4.0 Six Cylinder NA is also fun to drive; you can hear a beautiful raspy engine note. There's enough grunt to throw you back in your seat upon take-off, and yet not so much that you get unnecessarily out of shape. Weighing in at around 1704kg, the XR6 chassis strikes an outstanding balance between power and weight.
Falcon XR6 comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission but was fitted with the optional six-speed automatic transmission with a sequential sport shift. The sport shift gear changes felt quick whether in automatic or manual mode. Switching to performance mode in the XR6 provides the driver with more control over this. This is ideal for when out on the highway and trying to overtake or if you're on the twisty roads for a spirited drive.
One thing you will notice when driving any of the XR6 models is the reasonably firm ride, which makes the driver feel more connected to the road. The responsive chassis feels glued to the tarmac thanks to its sports suspension while still offering an excellent level of cushioning from harsh road surfaces.
Looks are subjective, but the shape of the Ford XR6 is very appealing. Exterior proportions and slender body lines create a clean, balanced shape. Exterior styling cues of the Ford XR6 include 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights and a rear spoiler. With the XR6 Turbo’s only real noticeable exterior trim difference being the upsized 18-inch 5 spoke alloy wheels. Ford at the time had a number of brake disc and caliper options used across the XR series which improved with power outputs.
Jumping inside the XR6 and XR6 Turbo, you find an understated interior design that appears more of a happy compromise than anything else. While the interior was functional and comfortable, it lacked some of the refinement of its competitors. This could be addressed by purchasing the up-spec "XR Luxury Pack" which adds sports leather seats, black carbon-look trim inserts, dual-zone climate control, premium sound system and 19x8 inch alloy wheels.
The FGX was introduced in 2014 and was the final iteration of the Falcon platform. While external styling changes were significant, the interior was carried over from the 2008-2014 FG model, which left many consumers wanting. Mechanically, there’s wasn’t much change, either with the venerable 4.0-litre inline-six making 195kW/391Nm or the 270kW/533Nm Turbo Barra version staying the same specification as in the previous model.
Styling was a modern take on the aging FG chassis; many liked the angular lines of the FGX, which took its cues from the One Ford product development plan introduced Globally in 2008. As a last hurrah and saving the best XR6 Turbo to last, Ford decided to produce 550 Sprint variants. The external differences between the XR6 Sprint and regular XR6 Turbo are limited to a pinstripe package, 19-inch black alloy wheels and a boot lip spoiler.
The significant differences were under the bonnet. Ford dipped into the leftover parts bin from FPV and added the FPV F6’s intercooler, turbocharger and injectors to the XR6 Turbo’s powertrain. After that it had a comprehensive retune which saw power jump to a hefty 370kW and 650Nm of torque.
Sadly, the Falcon was not directly replaced by a similarly sized vehicle. Instead, Ford Australia offered the fourth-generation Mondeo from Europe and the sixth-generation Mustang as replacement options marking the end of an era for the much-loved Falcon brand.

The higher carbon formulation increases rotor strength at elevated temperatures, specifically designed slots and v-shaped dimples to more efficiently expel gasses, dirt and water. The balanced pattern has evolved from racing and allows you to feel absolute control in hard braking situations.
