The RT Isuzu D-Max has earned its reputation as a no-nonsense workhorse that is just home toughing it out on the fire-trails as it is on the freeway on the way home thanks to its impressive off-road capabilities, generous load lugging ability and simple yet comfortable and functional interior.

The RT D-Max’s grunt comes courtesy of Isuzu’s trusted 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The unit produces a maximum of 130kW/380Nm, and is mated to your choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. The D-Max also comes in both 2WD and 4WD configuration. In 4WD models, transferring from two to four-wheel drive is handled by Isuzu’s Terrain Control electronic selector, offering shift-on-the-fly operability through the usual 2H, 4H and 4L functions.

All 380Nm of torque the D-Max’s turbo diesel four-banger is available between 1800-3000rpm with those fitted with the manual transmission and between 1800-2800rpm for those with the auto. Step on the throttle and the decibel level naturally rises, but even still, the D-Max remains one of the quieter members of this segment even under sustained acceleration. The engine never feels as though it’s being strained, simply pulling and pulling without the slightest of complaint. It may not be the most powerful Ute in its class, but the powertrain is definitely well-matched to the chassis. The D-Max’s engine also offers a wide torque band and relatively sharp throttle response, meaning you’ll have no issues safely passing trucks at the maximum legal speed on the highway.

As is the standard when it comes to the Ute market, the D-Max is built as a body-on-frame arrangement, with the front of the D-Max suspended by a rugged wishbone setup and the rear, a live axle. The D-Max is surprisingly comfortable on-road, without any kind of harshness to the ride, absorbing the most severe of potholes and keeping uncomfortable jolts away from the cabin. This set-up allows for a payload of 1050kg and a braked towing capacity of 3000kg. This sees the D-MAX’s carrying capacity being on par with most of its contenders, however towing capacity falls just a touch behind segment leaders like the Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50 with both rated at 3350kg. The 4WD D-Max’s outstanding off-road capability is due in no small part to its 235mm of ground clearance with approach, break-over and departure angles of 30.0, 22.4 and 22.7 degrees respectively.

Climbing into the RT D-Max, you’re greeted with an abundance of interior space with just enough to seat four adults comfortably. There’s far more length and more width in the cabin compared to its predecessor, with car-like comfort up front and decent head and legroom for rear passengers in the crew cab. Basic equipment is adequate within the segment, offering keyless entry, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, multi-information display, air conditioning with pollen filter and an impressive sound system complete with Bluetooth phone and music streaming. Opt for the D-Max LS-Terrain model and you’re treated to leather trim, an electrically operated driver’s seat, touchscreen navigation and audio system, and a reversing camera.

It’s clear that Isuzu has gone to great lengths to reduce engine noise inside the D-Max’s cockpit with additional engine bay soundproofing along with new cabin and body mountings. From the moment you turn over the D-Max 3.0l turbo-diesel power-plant, it’s clear that these efforts have paid off with none of the usual diesel clatter at idle.

The RT Isuzu D-Max is a handsome Ute packed with an impressive diesel engine, and offering strong all-round performance both on and off-road. It’s also competitively priced, well-equipped, giving it an excellent case against its many rivals in the segment.
