Ford celebrates 10 millionth Mustang
Since 1964, the model that defined the American muscle car, the every man sportscar
The Ford Mustang is statistically one of the best-selling sports cars of the last half-century and they've just rolled the ten millionth one off the production line at Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan, USA.
The very first Ford Mustang, VIN 001, was a white convertible, three-speed V8 model with 164bhp. Fifty years on the ten million Mustang pays homage to the original with a similar yet updated configuration - white, convertible, 6-speed manual gearbox and a 460bhp 5.0-litre V8 under the hood. You can see them here side by side in the photo below:
In order to celebrate this milestone, Ford employees and around 60 owners of various generations of the Mustang came together at the assembly plant. The various Mustang cars were parked up for the celebratory image of 10,000,000 units. Jim Farley, president of global markets, Ford Motor Company was also at the event, soaking in the joy of the car that defines the muscle car genre and the American driving spirit, saying “Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favourite around the world,”. He added, “I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car – a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”
Three WWII era P-51 Mustang fighter planes doing flyovers the Michigan plant were part of the celebrations that day. The new 2019 Ford Mustang is one of the best ones till date in terms of driving feel, technology, daily use and being an attainable V8 muscle car for the average Joe.
Only one other name stands out that has survived as a fan favourite performance brand for so many decades - the Porsche 911. The Ford Mustang outnumbers that 10 to 1.
