Every year the Texas Auto Writes Association (TAWA) hosts the Texas Truck Rodeo which can be seen as the Academy Awards for manufacturers of trucks, SUVs and crossovers. For the second year in a row, Ford took the crown with the F-150, but other makes and models were awarded in different sub-categories.
Last year the event relocated to the Longhorn River Ranch in Dripping Springs near the state's capital where this year's event was hosted again. About seventy journalists (including yours truly) took two days to test and evaluate sixty-four vehicles, with a combined value of nearly $4 million, on local streets and on off-road courses situated on the ranch.
The best SUV of the Lone Star State for this year is the Volvo XC60 and the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport was recognized as the best CUV. Other prize winners worth mentioning are the 2018 Ram 2500 Limited Tungsten as the winner in the category Heavy duty pickup trucks and the 2018 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Southfork that won in the Luxury pickup truck segment.
The best off-road pickup according to the Texas Auto Writers is the mighty Ford F-150 Raptor and the 2018 Nissan Titan Midnight Edition turned out to be the favorite Full-size pickup of the jurors. All the Midsize pickups were trumped by the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro while the best Off-road utility vehicle is the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Recon, shortly before being succeeded by the new generation JL.
