Ford v Ferrari has not only been appreciated by car enthusiasts
It is very rare for a car movie to attract the attention of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Some feature films such as the Fast & Furious franchise has always been appreciated among car fans. This is less the case for professional critics because although the Fast & Furious are full of impressive stunts, the writing of the script is not memorable enough.
The films follow on from one another and look very much alike. However, some of the car films do manage to make a good impression. This is the case of Baby Driver in 2017. Recently, it is Ford v Ferrari that has particularly distinguished itself. The film was already a box-office success, bringing in more than $200 million for a budget of $100 million.
In case you haven't seen it, the feature film shows how the Ford GT and a team of outsiders challenged and dominated Ferrari, then undisputed champion, at the Le Mans 24 Hours. The critics were unanimous. Not only is the film a real blockbuster, but it was nominated for the Academy's most prestigious award of Best Picture.
The film is also among the candidates for Oscar nominations. Le Mans 66 will thus face very big movies such as The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, 1917, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood and Parasite for the Best Picture award of 2019. The film was also nominated for the Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing awards.
