Ford vs Ferrari has been nominated for four Oscars
The nominees for 2020's edition of the Academy Awards has been something of a controversial sticking point, to say the least. In amongst all the debate though, the automotive world has been given a very surprising shoe-in. This comes thanks to the critically-acclaimed Ford vs Ferrari, a film that tells the story of the two manufacturers' rivalry in endurance racing in the 1960s and especially the point when Henry Ford II finally got one over Enzo Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.
It's up against some seriously tough competition in the Best Picture category (other films nominated include The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Little Women and Joker) so I wouldn't expect it to score any wins here, but Ford vs Ferrari could really get somewhere in the other categories it's nominated for. Those categories are Film Editing (where it's up against The Irishman as well as Jojo Rabbit and Joker again) Sound Editing (where it's up against 1917 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, among others) and Sound Mixing (where Joker and 1917 appear again in the list of nominees).
The most amazing fact out of all of this though is that Ford vs Ferrari could very well be the first motor racing film to ever be nominated for an Academy Award. If that's true, it's very huge news indeed. How a motor racing-based film hasn't been nominated before considering we've had movies such as Rush in recent years is somewhat perplexing, but such is the nature of awards season.
56 years from that historic victory at Le Mans, could Ford's iconic GT40 make history again, this time on the silver screen? Who knows. We'll just have to wait until February 10 2020 when the awards start rolling in.
