Formula Drift Round 3 and 4 Recap

Vaughn Gittin Jr sweeps both rounds of FD Seattle.

This past weekend was Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2020 Formula Drift Championship which took place at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA. The weekend started off wet, but ended with so much excitement. So let's recap what happened and where we are after the rounds.

Getting straight to the winner, Vaughn Gittin Jr happened to take both rounds of the weekend. Fredric Aasbo in his Papadakis Racing Toyota Supra took the second place spot during Round 3, while former Formula Drift champ Michael Essa nabbed the third place position.

Round 4 was a nailbiter. The final battle between Vaughn Gittin Jr and second place winner Justin Pawlak seemed like it took an hour to finish. There was one battle between them where Gittin Jr attempted to pass Pawlak (which has happened so few times you could probably count it on one hand) and they had contact, then had to go into a one-more-time situation, then Gittin Jr had contact with Pawlak which forced his crew to do more work on the car. When it finally ended, Gittin Jr came up the winner. Ryan Tuerck grabbed the third place spot for Round 4.

Notable in Round 4 was Aasbo's absence from Top 16. The 3d printed intake manifold on his Supra engine split apart. It was coming down to the wire, but the team couldn't put it together before the time on their competition timeout ran out.

After the weekend Tuerck has secured the top spot in the 2020 Formula Drift Championship standings while he currently sits with 272 points. Gittin Jr's back to back wins propelled him to second place in the championship, only 8 points behind Tuerck with 264. Even with going out so early in Round 4, Aasbo's second place spot in Round 3 has helped him stay in the Top 3 of the championship with 236 points.

It gets close after that. Pawlak is close behind Aasbo with 232. Then Gittin Jr's teammate Chelsea DeNofa and Aurimas "Odi" Bakchis are tied with 228 points.

Formula Drift will be on a break for about a month, before Rounds 5 and 6 Formula Drift Texas October 30-November 1.
