FR Eurocup: Kush Maini ends 2019 season with a rookie win at Yas Marina
Kush Maini started Round 10 in 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup finishing 12th and sixth in the two practice sessions in his #41 M2 Competition car at Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. The Indian looked good in the sessions as he then qualified sixth for Race 1 in Qualifying 1.
He was then eighth in Qualifying 2 for Race 2 after a mistake cost him couple of places on the grid. It was a steady run from the Indian in the first racer on Saturday in Race 1 but had Patrick Pasma and rookie title holder Caio Collet right behind him.
He held them off eventually to finish sixth and score his third rookie of the 2019 season. After the high in the first race, the Race 2 didn't fare well for Maini after a contact with Frank Bird at the hairpin damaged his front wing which forced him into a retirement.
He retained sixth in the drivers' standings with 102 points in all and ended up as the second best rookie behind Collet. He was also awarded for showing good racing spirit all year long. His efforts helped M2 Competition end as best rookie team and fifth overall.
“It has been a long time since my last rookie win as we had a rough patch in the middle of the season," said JK Tyre Motorsport-supported racer Maini. "I also made some mistakes costing a lot of points. In Race 1, I was able to move into fifth place at the start before losing some pace and Sebastian Fernandez took advantage to get past me.
"My goal this year was to learn as much as possible, so to finish sixth in the general classification, best of the rest behind R-ace GP and MP Motorsport drivers while being second-best rookie would be a small consolation prize despite the lost opportunities during the season."
