From on-track to off-road: Can David Coulthard master 4x4 driving?
As a former Formula 1 driver I’m used to driving flat out on flat tracks, and looking at every single aspect of myself and my car to extract the maximum performance to help me win.
Of course, the only point of contact between the car and the tarmac is the tyres. They are one of the most important elements of any race car setup – but the same applies to any road car.
To help understand this, I teamed up with Cooper Tires and DriveTribe to explore some of the key issues to understand when choosing your tyres.
First up, Cooper Tires and DriveTribe wanted to take me well out of my comfort zone, so they flew me out to the Cooper Tires test facility in Texas – and then let me loose in a 4x4.
I had to tackle steep climbs, muddy tracks, and even a full-on river – terrain tricky enough to challenge any driver and any car.
But as every off-road driver knows, having a capable vehicle is pointless unless you have the right rubber underneath it. After all, you can have all the power in the world but you won’t get up the hill unless you’ve got the tyres to give you the grip you’ll need.
See how I got on in the video…
