Games Workshop made a real life space marine tank
In the world of geekdom, a lot of sci-fi vehicles get a real life copy. Remember Halo's Warthog and people making Transformers out of Camaros? Well, Games Workshop did something similar with a tank, twice.
If you aren't familiar with the lore of Games Workshop and its games, then I can give you a quick history lesson, seeing as I work for them - this is going to be fun.
We make toys...
That's right, since 1975, Games Workshop have created wargaming miniatures, rulebooks and gaming accessories for the world to fall in love with. Based in Nottingham, they make a mixture of dirty, gritty science fiction (called grimdark), fantasy and licenced games for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
They also do smaller, silly games like Blood-bowl: an American football styled game with Orks, smashing elves into the ground with a spiky ball in hand. Sounds like madness right? Well, yeah, you're right.
But it doesn't end with board games, oh no. Games Workshop has a large collection of Video games, created with small and large companies around the world. The most famous of all of these is Dawn of War, now with its third game going strong - we will come back to this game later on, for good reasons.
So, what's the deal with the tank?
Ah, yes, the tank! In the grim darkness of the far future, there are only awesome looking battle vehicles that I want to play with! One of those is the RH-1-N-0 Tracked Exploration and Multi-Purpose Defense Vehicle, or Rhino for short. There are actually two rhinos tanks that were created, by using a real tank base, then giving it a royal, Imperium makeover.
Two Rhinos have been created, the Ultramarine Rhino which is painted in bright blue, which protects Warhammer World in Nottingham - with its many purity seals, to keep it waterproof and works as an alarm too. This tank has sat in several places around the site but now sits proudly near the main entrance to the hobby centre. This tank also moves, there was video footage of this, but no longer is on the interwebs. Chaos must have burnt it. Damn.
The other is a Blood Raven's Rhino, painted up in cream and red for the release of Dawn of War II, back in 2009. Commissioned by the games company THQ, they show off that it is a REAL tank... by crushing a car with it. A bit mean, but it might have been owned by Ork scum! Only they would own a green Peugeot 105.
Well, there is a little bit of motoring geekiness to brighten up your Monday. I always smile when I see that Rhino every day, even if it is massive!
