Gaming News: F1 2019 cover art, legends mode and F2 involvement confirmed
Today it was confirmed that one of the two pre-order bonuses for the upcoming F1 2019 video game will be called "Legends Edition", with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost being playable characters in a special game mode - along with their likenesses being recreated for use as an avatar choice in the Career Mode. The special game mode will consist of eight individual race challenges - and in addition to this, both Senna and Prost's helmet designs have been turned to liveries for online multiplayer. Their iconic 1990 cars, the McLaren MP4/5B and the Ferrari F1-90 respectively, will be added to the existing classic car line-up.
Paul Jeal, F1 Franchise Director at Codemasters said the following on the Legends Edition: "We are absolutely delighted to have resurrected F1’s greatest ever rivalry between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. Their rivalry began right back in the 1984 season and reached one of the most dramatic ever climaxes on the first lap of the Japanese Grand Prix during the 1990 season. It’s a rivalry which has transcended way beyond the sport and is regarded as the greatest of all time by F1 fans. We know our community will love that the two legends of the sport have finally been immortalised together in our game."
As Codemasters celebrates their 10th anniversary as the sole developer of F1 games, two race winning machines from the dramatic 2010 season will be added to the classic car line-up. Those said cars will be the McLaren MP4-25 and the Ferrari F110.
The Legends Edition cover art features a gold background, the iconic 1990 cars and both Senna & Prost. The UK and Global cover art feature Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel - with certain countries having their native F1 driver on the cover in place of Vettel. In my opinion, this year's cover art is much more simplistic and less crowded than the 2018 cover art - but it isn't quite as good as its predecessor. Still quite nice though (especially the Legends cover).
FORMULA 2 FINALLY COMES TO THE F1 GAME FRANCHISE
The car was teased in the trailer, fans have been wanting it for years - and now the feeder series is finally debuting in the F1 game franchise as a part of Career Mode. Players will be able to compete in a recreation of the 2018 F2 season at first (with the 2019 season being added in a future online update), and they will be able to compete alongside F2 graduates George Russell, Lando Norris and Alexander Albon. After that, players will compete in a virtual 2019 F1 season at either Williams, McLaren or Toro Rosso.
Jeal stated the following on F2's integration into F1 2019: "It’s consistently been one of the most requested features from our community and it comes at a perfect time with the top three drivers from 2018 in George Russell, Lando Norris and Alexander Albon progressing to F1® for this season. We can’t wait to unveil more details on how this is integrated into the career mode in the coming weeks.”
WRITERS OPINION - F1 2019 CONFIRMS ITS RACING GAME OF THE YEAR CANDIDACY
If you're an F1 fan, you need to buy this game. If you're a racing game fan, you definitely need to buy this game. The added bonus of F2 being a part of the game will convince a lot of people to buy it, not to mention the Senna vs Prost game mode being a huge selling point for old school fans. In my review of F1 2018, I gave it 4.5 stars out of 5 - and called it "superb all-round and definitely Codemasters's best F1 game to date". From the way things are looking, F1 2019 might just hit a full five stars...
