Geely's Bin Yue SUV has a 'Star Wars inspired interior'
I'm no fan of small SUVs, regardless what country they come from but the Geely Bin Yue caught my interest today. Other than having an interesting name and attractive styling, it has a questionable design inspiration for the interior.
Let's quickly go over the features of the exterior before we get to the interior. The exterior has a somewhat original design for a Chinese made SUV with a 'cosmos grille that is hugged by angular LED headlights. On the bumper, there are some sporty air intakes and a silver accent around the grille and headlights. The lower part of the Bin Yue has black body cladding, sharp body lines and quite a small amount of glass. It also has a floating roof which dominates the upper part of the car and it meets an overly large rear spoiler. It looks fine but the rear spoiler is too big for my liking.
Now onto the interior. The interior looks stylish enough for a small SUV but the design inspiration concerns me. Geely says that the dashboard has been designed to resemble a jet plane...what jet plane, I'm not sure. Geely even went to the extent of saying "many parts have also been inspired by sci-fi elements such as supersonic fighters and Star Wars".
I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, both the Disney Canon and Legends. I can't think of any Star Wars ships that could have influenced the Bin Yue's interior. However, the interior looks really nice and seems like it has used premium materials. Highlights include a 10.25 inch infotainment system, a 4G/Wi-Fi connectivity, over-the-air updates and voice recognition technology.
The Bin Yue is offered with two petrol powered engines. The largest and most powerful is the 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine, co-developed with Volvo. That engine produces a respectable 174bhp and 188lb ft of torque. It'll come with a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox and will do the 0-62mp run in 7.9 seconds. Expect an average fuel economy of 46.3mpg UK.
The other engine is a 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine which produces 134bhp and 151lb ft of torque. It'll come with a 6-speed manual gearbox which will give you a fuel economy rating of 53.3mpg UK. No 0-62mph times were given.
The Bin Yue is also technologically advanced and actually rather safe. It features a Level 2 semi-autonomous system which uses wave rader and HD cameras dotted about the exterior of the car. The Bin Yue can follow other vehicles at speeds up to 93mph and can automatically change lanes. A few other features include automatic parking, automatic emergency braking and blind spot warning.
