Hyundai introduced the first Genesis model in 2004 and the big, bold, luxurious sedan was widely well received, prompting the Korean giant to branch out and launch the first independent standalone Genesis vehicle in 2015. For four years, Genesis has built variants of the same sedan and then it announced plans for an SUV. Here it is.

The GV80 is going to be built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive platform and will feature the design elements we've come to know and appreciate in all Genesis models. Or dislike, depending on your point of view.

Anyway. The new SUV is going to come with a three-row interior layout as an optional extra. The base model is going to be RWD with AWD also available as an option. Normally, Genesis cars have always been named G-something but the brand has decided to add the "V", which, and I'm quoting their words, stands for versatility.

The car was designed in collaboration with studios located in South Korea, the U.S. and Germany. From the outside, you'll notice the quad-lamp style headlights and the Crest Grille. The inspiration for the design of the wheels comes from orchids (again, I'm quoting). Inside we find clean lines, minimalist design emphasized by slim air vents and an elegant gear selector on the centre console.

More pictures are going to be made available in the upcoming weeks. The GV80 is going to be launched in the next few weeks (South Korea) and next few months (rest of the world).

  • I’ve seen the concept a while back

Sounds promising and I think it’s the perfect timing for another luxury SUV

    • in all honesty... that looks a bit ugly. These pictures still keep some mystery but I'm guessing the end product will look better than that. Maybe. Hopefully

    • I agree

More of G90 influence could work

  • I think it is clear that they will have to make more history in the car world. Existing for only 3-4 years is hard. No one will take you seriously. So far, though, they have built a reputation for good value (just what the parent brand Hyundai-Kia wanted) and decent quality. Looks like a bright future for this company as soon as their SUV goes on sale—the big money maker for a marque today.

    • that's the key, I guess. You look at the car and you think "that's pretty cool, what is it?" "Genesis, part of the Hyundai family." "A what? How much is it... what? That cheap? Cool!"
