Get ready for a Mercedes EQ takeover

Mercedes-Benz confirms six new all-electric EQ models.

Following the release of the EQC crossover and EQV people-mover based on the GLC an V-Class respectively, Mercedes-Benz has announced a significant expansion of the EQ range, the brand's electric vehicle subsidiary.

The first of the newest member of the electric range is called the EQS, and has already been teased multiple times. This EV is based on the new-generation Mercedes S-Class and will be the marque's first fullsize executive electric vehicle.

The EQS will shortly be followed with the release of the smaller EQE midsize saloon, based on the same architecture as the S, featuring similar technology at a lower price point.

The EQS and EQE will also debut in SUV body styles, near completing the 'Modular Rear Architecture (MRA)' based electric cars. These will be based on the current ICE-powered GLS and GLE respectively.

Additionally, in the more affordable compact segment - two crossovers will be available, the EQA, based on the GLA; which will be followed later by the EQB, unsurprisingly to be based on the GLB.

The new architecture is custom-developed for electric vehicles, and will be configurable to suit electric versions of the most successful ICE platforms in the Mercedes line-up due to its modular design. This includes the capability to easily modify the shape and position of the batteries, wheelbase, track and every other component of the cars - making it possible for Mercedes-Benz to easily design and develop a range of passenger cars.

According to Worldwide Harmonised light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), the EQ models will boast a range of up to 700 kilometres on a full charge, including the larger EQS, thus complying with electric vehicle range requirements for a production car.



The design of the upcoming EQS gains inspiration from the VISION EQS concept car, likewise with all upcoming EQ cars - and at present, studious testing is being conducted at Mercedes-Benz's Test and Technology Centre in Immendingen, Germany; and further testing is being conducted in the USA and China.

Additionally, testing stations have been setup in Scandinavia to test extreme cold climates; the Nardo test-ring for extreme speeds; and in Southern Europe and South Africa for monitoring battery resilience in constant heat.

The EQS has already piled up far more than two million test kilometres from the heat of South Africa to the cold of Northern Sweden.

Mercedes states that "the EQS will be the S-Class of electric vehicles. That is why it is undergoing the same demanding development program as any other vehicle that has the privilege of proudly bearing the three-pointed star."

The EQS itself has entered final stages of testing, and the smaller compact EQA is scheduled to enter production by the end of 2020.

As part of Mercedes-Benz's "Ambition 2039" initiative, the marque is aiming for a carbon-neutral fleet by 2039. Furthermore, MB sets their goals for electric and hybrid vehicles to account for over half of their sales in under 10 years time.

  • payback in the past on electrics was peace of mind or doing the right thing sort of.

    I jumped in 3 years ago but I will never see any payback much less break even on my vehicle.

    Costs have to come down to equal ICE or no one will make the move.
