Goodyear confirms it will supply tyres for the 2022 LE MANS VIRTUAL SERIES
The household name for tyres extends its sponsorship for this weekend's digital fight for victory at the world’s most famous endurance race.
The world-renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans will be recreated once again for the digital platform - a thrilling battle away from the tarmac that will see the Circuit de la Sarthe graced with some of Motorsport's finest machines (and drivers), all equipped with Goodyear Tyres.
Racers from all corners of Motorsport and the planet will take to the track at this weekend's event, from Formula 1 prodigy Max Verstappen, all the way to legendary NASCAR and IndyCar driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
Tyre strategy, as many of us know, is one of the most important considerations to make in the world of sim racing, which opened up an opportunity for Goodyear to develop a virtual tyre specifically for the championship that utilises data used in traditional Motorsport products.
Understanding the properties of each tyre compound in racing is vital to having a successful race strategy in any Motorsport. Understanding the way that the tyre heats up and degrades has the potential to ensure maximum track performance and therefore the optimum drive.
Meticulously testing different virtual tyre compounds up against real-world data has significantly increased the accuracy in Goodyear's effort to create an effectively simulated Tyre performance for the digital environment.
Taking the partnership beyond the asphalt could not have come at a better time for Goodyear, as many Motorsports events are transitioning to the much more manageable digital sphere. It is the next step on a Le Mans journey that began in 1965, when Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt secured the victory for Ferrari.
The news comes after the tyre brand was recently appointed as the exclusive tyre of LMP2 at Le Mans, and also in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and European Le Mans Series (ELMS).
Ben Crawley, Goodyear’s Motorsport Director explains that: "Whether on the real race track or the virtual one, global Motorsport events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans give Goodyear a platform to reach millions of fans around the world. With eSports continuing to grow, it’s an important part of endurance racing and we want to be involved at a high level."
All the while Goodyear continues to maintain its role as an official partner to Le Mans organising body the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), we can be sure to expect some truly fascinating technology at the disposal of racers behind the wheel.
