The importance of having high quality and suitable tyres on one’s car is ofter underestimated. While there are a myriad of factors to consider from braking performance on wet roads to traction and grip levels in the dry, and even the impact of certain tyres on a car’s fuel consumption, the overarching purpose of any tyre is safety. The reality is that these four pieces of rubber are the only things keeping your car on the road as you dash trough the rain on that dark, November evening. Performance in different weather conditions is therefore key.

Having established this, the next question is naturally the specific performance requirements and priorities of the driver. These may range from those who wish to take their car on track for which dry grip and braking performance are paramount, or those who would like all-year round performance but who perhaps value longevity, low noise levels or indeed fuel economy.

Choosing the correct tyre can hence be a relatively daunting task, and given other priorities and perhaps a general misconception that all tyres perform equally, price is usually the determining factor. However, this is a dangerous strategy, as the difference between budget and premium brand tyre performance, and indeed performance tyre-to-tyre within a specific brand is much more significant than one might think.

In this article I will concentrate on the priorities of most motorists in terms of tyre performance, with a focus on those who own prestige, sports or performance cars. Such motorists are more than likely concerned with a good all-round tyre that offers superior grip and braking performance in both wet and dry conditions.

There are of course winter tyres to consider as well, with compounds that offer superior traction, generally below 7 degrees celsius. However, broadly speaking, motorists generally only have one set of wheels and tyres for their car, and hence expect excellent all-year round performance.

The tyres I am testing are the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 5s, fitted to my Audi TT’s 20” rims, with a 255 section and 30 profile (i.e. 255 30 R20). My tyre priorities are hence excellent traction and braking in wet and dry conditions, and as low a decibel level as possible given the large diameter of the wheels.

Firstly, the Goodyears are fitted with a rim protector which is absolutely essential to protect tyres from as much kerb damage as possible.

Traction in dry weather conditions is excellent, as are the tyres’ handling properties afforded by the asymmetric tread pattern and stiff side-walls.

In terms of braking in dry conditions, the Asymmetrics are also excellent, and class leading in the wet with a very short braking distance which is very reassuring indeed. This is largely due to Goodyear technology which results in the tyre’s road contact patch increasing under the force of braking.

Like the previous Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 3 tyres I had fitted to my car, the new Asymmetric 5s are relatively quiet especially given the 20” tyre size with a decibel level of 72dB. In a smaller 18” rim size (245 45 R18), the tyres have a 71dB rating. Although 1dB doesn’t sound like a great deal of difference, due to the logarithmic scale of sound decibels the variance is noticeable.

Being a performance tyre offering such impressive grip and braking performance, it is unsurprising that 20” Goodyear Asymmetric 5 tyres in a 20” rim-size are rated at E (on a scale of A-G) in terms of fuel economy. However, one must remember that rival tyres of the same dimensions from Continental (Sport Contact 6) are similarly rated. In addition, if one drops down to an 18” rim size, the fuel economy rating of the Goodyear Asymmetric 5s improves to level C.

Compared to the Pirelli and Continental tyres I had previously fitted to my cars, I have also found that Goodyears offer much more longevity, keeping running costs to a minimum over a given car’s life.

In summary, the latest Asymmetric 5 tyres from Goodyear not only offer excellent all-year round traction and handling performance, excelling in terms of braking grip particularly during inclement weather conditions, but are also quiet on the road with the added bonus of longevity.

  • Excellent! So nice to see an article on tyres. Sadly, like so many drivers who live in London, price is a very important factor for me, and the reason is this.

    There is so much detritus on London roads, especially in residential areas, that you are constantly at risk of driving over nails or broken glass. As punctures from these are often near the sidewall of the tyre, that means a replacement. When this happens I always buy two, put them on the front (my car is front wheel drive), and have the best two remaining tyres put on the rear. If it’s been two or three years I might go for premium tyres, but usually it’s less, so I go for fairly budget. I think I’m running Nexen at the moment.

  • Excellent write up. And thanks actually. Have someone that needs quieter tires and haven't been able to find the right ones. 71db is acceptable for sure.
