Gran Turismo is officially an Olympic sport
Well, that took us by surprise!
The video game we all played growing up has now been officially named an Olypmic sport and we will all think we are more qualified than not for it.
This news comes as the International Olympic Committee announces it is hosting an Olympic Virtual Series between May 13 and June 23 and is hosting a wide array of sports. Five virtual competitions will be held during the event including baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing, and motorsport.
No specific details have been released about the Gran Turismo Sport Olympic competition, but given the IOC sees it as a genuine sport is quite phenomenal. More details on the event and how to enter will be revealed in due course, but it's likely going to be very competitive to get involved with.
IOC's president Thomas Bach said, "The Olympic Virtual Series is a new, unique Olympic digital experience that aims to grow direct engagement with new audiences in the field of virtual sports. Its conception is in line with Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and the IOC's Digital Strategy. It encourages sports participation and promotes the Olympic values, with a special focus on youth."
"A number of [international sports federations] have well established virtual sports initiatives; and thanks to the cooperation between the IOC, the IFs and the publishers, the OVS is an exciting step forward for the virtual sports world and the Olympic Movement," David Lappertient, chair of the IOC's e-sports gaming liaison group added.
