Grassroots Motorsport in New Zealand's capital.
Yesterday was a quiet Sunday like most of them, I got asked by a friend if I wanted to go to a local Motorsport event. Me never hearing of it thought I'd go along and have a look. Around 50 cars were entered for the first round of the Hutt Valley Motorsport Club's Trentham Autocross series. There were a variety of cars there such as a Ford Escort MK2 V6, a Nissan Micra, a Suzuki Cappucino and a couple of Impreza's. The course was on a small bit of road in a quiet industrial area in Trentham, Upper Hutt but it was plenty of fun to watch. My personal favourite of the event was this Subaru Impreza STi 2 door, it was incredibly quick and the flutter sounded great! It is a much watch.
I was surprised by this Nissan 180SX, it might look like your normal 180SX but it has something special under the hood, an LS1! Kidding guys it's still a Nissan engine, the VH41 which is a 4130cc V8 built by Nissan producing 268bhp at 5600rpm and 377nm of torque at 4000rpm, a hefty number of figures at standard but I think this engine would've been modified. The 180SX finished 2nd overall on the day.
I remember this car on Gran Turismo and used it excessively, I was stunned to see one in person. The Suzuki Cappucino, a 657cc 3 cylinder turbo Kei car producing 63bhp. It is a VERY small car so it wasn't too surprising to see how good it went around the course. This particular example has an impressive 118bhp, it might not seem like much but for this car it's plenty.
It's always nice to see some older cars racing at events. This Austin Mini Mayfair wasn't too shabby and had a nice sound.
