Ground Breaking Cars of the Decade
Here's to another decade filled with great cars and more achievement
As we are close to wrapping up this decade, I think it’s time to look back to see some of the greatest cars that have been developed in the last 10 years and what they’ve been able to achieve.
Rather than being developed as a road car first, the Ford GT was born on the track to succeed in the world of competitive racing. Ford developed the GT in only 22 months, to race at the 2016 Le Mans in the GTE Pro category. The GT was created to celebrate Ford’s 50th anniversary win at the Le Mans in 1966. What makes this car astonishing and deserving of being in this list is the fact that it was able to win at the Le Mans the first year that entered the race.
Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive
The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive was the world’s first and most powerful electric supercar when it hit the roads in 2013, and was more powerful than its V8 petrol-powered twin. Compared to the electric hypercars and supercars available today, the SLS AMG EV might feel outdated and might not seem like it deserves to be on this list. However, Mercedes, most specifically this car, was the first serious step in the direction of high performance electric cars.
Tesla Model 3 and Model S
Whether EVs are liked or not, we can all agree that they are becoming more popular and reliable every day, with the major contributor to this cause being Tesla. Model 3 was ground breaking since it made EVs relatively cheaper and affordable. Since Tesla has started delivering the Model 3 to their rightful owners, they have been popping up everywhere! But the Model 3 would not be possible without the Model S as it laid the technological groundwork for Model 3 to be based off of.
The Holy Trinity – Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari Laferrari, McLaren P1
The holy trinity have taken the automotive technology to the next level in the last decade. Although hybrid systems are not new and have been used in sport cars like the Honda NSX and the BMW i8, these three brands used this system to reach bewildering results. So, all three cars are capable of reaching speeds above 300 km/h whilst, keeping emissions similar to that of a family saloon.
One of the greatest and noteworthy achievements of this decade was reaching 300+ mph in a car, all thanks to the superb engineering of the Bugatti Chiron SuperSports. According to a quick google search a Boeing 747 has a typical take off speed of 184 mph, and the Chiron did 300+ mph and was balanced at that speed and had enough downforce to keep it on the ground! I just want to take a moment to appreciate the brilliance that went into this project and what a great accomplishment it is, not just for Bugatti but for all of us that were able to witness it!
Koenigsegg One:1 has a hp-to-kg weight ratio of 1:1 and if you’re into numbers and ratios this would be really interesting to you. But, what I found interesting was that the One:1 is able to run on a number of different fuels including gasoline, race fuel and E85 biofuel. I would assume a car with this sort of power and performance to be very specific about what sort fuel it can run on, and I wouldn’t expect E85 biofuel to be it. This would mean that we can have environmentally friendly supercars that aren’t electric. So, it is quiet an astonishing and ground breaking car.
