Guy accidentally orders 27 more Teslas than he actually wanted

And each order has a non-refundable 100 euro fee...

We've all been through it - you jump online on your favorite auction or sale site, select your products and add them to the cart, then click checkout only to find out your order hasn't gone through due to a glitch with the website. Well, this story takes that up a few notches.

A German who goes by the name of Ballon-Man on Reddit recently described a horror situation when his dad decided to buy a new Model 3. Existing owners of a Ford Kuga, they decided to replace the SUV as it was getting on a bit. Germany has an incentive where the state gives you cash to buy an EV, and this was basically doubled during the Covid-19 crisis, so settling on the Model 3 was an easy choice.

So, dad jumps onto his laptop around 9pm. Places order for a brand new Tesla Model 3, with the Autopilot option. Clicks confirm (at which point they'll deduct 100 euros as a deposit), and nothing happens. Dad tries again, same issue. So dad tries again. And again. And can probably see where this is going.

He persisted for around 2 hours, then gave it one last shot before calling it quits. And what do you know, this time it worked! And that's when the penny dropped. After logging in to check their order, they found out that each of their last 28 requests actually did end up being successfully submitted. That's 2,800 euros paid as a non-refundable deposit. And the order total came to 1,404,000 euros (that's $1.58 million USD).

Frantic phone call ensued. Thankfully, Tesla realised what had happened, and canceled all the orders. They refunded the 2,800 euros and asked Ballon-Man's dad to place a fresh new order.

Crisis averted, though there's a "moral of the story" situation here for all of us. When buying anything online, contact the company in case of any issues. Or else you'll have a Ballon-Man story to tell afterwards...

    • I’m sure Deutsche will throw him a few bones, it’s a viable business plan. Worse case senecio they commandeer his Teslas. They’ll probably provide the funds for a location as well.

  • I am interested to know, if at any point while placing the order, he decided to change the colour?

And if you order 28 the same colour do you get a discount?

  • Why does the title say that the deposits are non-refundable when the article says Tesla did refund them?

    • They refunded the deposit as the purchaser accidentally created multiple orders. If you do a standard Model 3 order then change your mind, you lost the 100 euros :)

  • This is the perfect DT article: it isn’t too nerdy but then again, it isn’t too stupid. It’s got a unique story and it’s well written, well done!
