Happy Birthday to Andrea Moda F1 driver and the original Top Gear 'Stig', Perry McCarthy.
Perry tested F1 cars for Williams and Benetton and raced at Le Mans but is more famous for that dreadful stint with the woeful Andrea Moda team in 1992, where he failed at every attempt to drag the S921 out of pre-qualifying.
His teammate, Roberto Moreno, didn't fare much better, only qualifying once all that year, at Monaco, where he managed eleven laps before the engine predictably gave up the ghost.
If you are new to F1 or just haven’t read Perry's story of that time, ‘Flat Out Flat Broke’ then do yourself a favour and get a copy. One of the most entertaining sport books you’ll ever read.
A rare shot of Perry in the Andrea Moda, trying to get into qualifying at Monaco 1992.
