Has DiRT 2.0 just been confirmed?
Mysterious tweeting and an image confirm a new rally game is around the corner, but what will it be? Answers on a postcard...
First there was a pizza website that made references to Colin McRae, now we have tweets and a teaser screenshot from various people in the know that all say the same thing: 2.0.
That includes the official DiRT, Codemasters and FIA World Rallycross Twitter accounts, all of which posted the "2.0" message and nothing else on the 24th of September.
Oliver Solberg, son of Norwegian rally driver Petter Solberg (known best for his Subaru days), is involved in the game and also posted the same mysterious number.
Most recently, a follow-up tweet was posted ─ "26/09/2018. 10:30 BST. #NotAfraid" ─ alongside a screenshot of an Audi Quattro rally car in a night setting with its many, many headlights on.
The smart money would suggest the game being teased is DiRT Rally 2.0, as that is the most recent franchise and its release would make the most sense. Plus a sequel is long overdue, given that the first game arrived in 2016.
But then that little decimal point could well be a hint at a Colin McRae Rally sequel, or maybe that is just wishful thinking on our part. Technically, the DiRT games carried on the mantle, anyway.
It could also be WRC 8, assuming Bigben Interactive / Kylotonn Games has lost the official rally license (maybe the contract only covered five games), or perhaps even DiRT 5, although DiRT 5 only came out in 2017.
Not that more proof is needed to suggest a rally game of some sort is looming, but it is worth noting that British rally co-driver, Phil Mills, posted about working on a new rally game and when it will arrive.
The Facebook post, now deleted, said: "Back in the co-driver seat again today ─ in a studio though!! A full day of recording getting a new rally game ready for launch early next year, good fun and the closest to the real thing I have ever experienced! Full details in about six weeks."
Whatever rally game is coming, it looks like the wait to find out will be short-lived and the game itself is potentially less than six months away. Maybe it is best to whittle away the time in Forza Horizon 4 while you wait.
