      • If there’s a problem it’s useful diagnosing with out a mechanic. Sometimes it might be a simple fix and on one occasion a £2 part. A dealer/mechanic would have charged for diagnosing and the fitting of the part.

    • My mechanic loved I had it for my Saab, I'm pretty tech savvy, so codes and description of how the car responds gave him a good idea what was going on. But it's not just for wiping the error codes of you have no idea what you're doing, as Eddie mentions above.

    • At best, a good one can tell you most of what you need to diagnose your car's defects, but you still need to be an experienced mechanic to know exactly what it means. An excess fuelling, or overeating fast idle can be a whole host of things that simply cannot be diagnosed using just an OBD scanning tool, for example. Deleting fault codes doesn't fix the fault either. Some codes disappear on their own anyway, after the ECU has gone through a certain number of data updates during use. There is SO much more to using an OBD interface that it can only ever be an indicator of a fault. If you do your own servicing, It can help to reset the service light, but then you might only have changed the oil and filter, not the brake fluid, topped up the catalyst fluid, checked your brake wear, checked the inside edges of your tyres, etc, etc... which was what the light was there to remind you to get done.

    • Yes I have used an OBD device to correctly diagnose a blocked fuel filter on a diesel Jag. I then tried to book my car in at a local Jag dealer just for a fuel filter change. The person on reception said it might not be that and we will need your car for 2 days to diagnose the fault. I said I have diagnosed the fault and want to pay for a fuel filter change and I would take the risk if it was something else (fuel pump for example). They would’t accept this! I did explain I have an engineering background in fuel, pressures, filtration and combustion but apparently the inexperienced person on reception somehow knew better! They literally wanted to extort 2 days of labour costs from me. I phoned another Jag dealer who accommodated my request the next day. I waited whilst they replaced the fuel filter and everything worked fine afterwards.

      I wrote a letter of complaint to the original Jag dealer and have never used them since.
