Head 2 Head takes European luxury V8s on a very American road trip

If you’ve been keeping up with MotorTrend’s Head 2 Head series you’ll know it’s essentially required petrolhead viewing. It tells you everything you need to know about the latest performance cars and, vitally, how they stack up against each other – in terms of handling, performance, drifting and even (sometimes) practicality.
Hosts Jethro Bovingdon and Jonny Lieberman took a slightly different tack for the recent season finale, however – instead taking on a gorgeous road trip from LA to Vegas in search of steak. Remember to head over to MotorTrend to start your free trial.
How now raw cow?
Jethro (pictured) and Jonny also pitch an Audi R8 RWS and Aston Martin Vantage against each other in the latest series of Head 2 Head
Although Head 2 Head is usually your go-to show for lairy drifts in and pin-sharp analysis of sports cars, it’s also a good place for petrolhead adventures – in this case, finding a super saloon that isn’t a Mercedes-AMG S-Class. The two contenders are Europe’s finest: Jaguar’s XJR 575 and the Maserati Quattroporte GTS – a British brute and revvy Italian whose engine has had a touch of the Ferrari magic.
We won’t spoil the eventual winner, but the tests are as gruelling as they are childish – one involves a top-speed test where each host takes their cars down a dead-straight road as fast as they dare. The only catch is, they’re not allowed to see the speedo. It’s a cunning test of each car’s ability to give you confidence near to its top speed.
Along the way the pair also stop off at the ghost town of Nelson – where the design of the cars plays second fiddle to a hulking slice of welded-together truck/bus monstrosity.
Anyway – it’s a fantastic show and well worth checking out. Feast your eyes and car-geek glands on the clip below, and remember you can and get a 14-day free trial.
