Hello Volvo owners!
I am looking at purchasing a used 2009 Volvo S60 2.5AWD (pictured), as it only has 59k original miles on it. As such I was wondering what I should be expecting for maintenance on it as it nears the 75k-100k range as I plan on owning it for a few years at least. I fully appreciate any and all feedback or insights you may have!
Thanks,
Dan

Unfortunately she was sold late last night. Cant even be mad as the ol girl was only $7k. I appreciated all of your advice! I may still be joining the Volvo tribe yet because that new S90 T6 is looking saucy.

  • Personally I’d want something that sets the pulse racing a bit more. My dad had a couple of Volvos, very comfy, capable cars. Seemed well-made and had a premium feel. The 5 speed auto box was a bit sedentary though. For the money though, surely you could get an MX5 or a GT86? 🤨

    • As much as I would love to, it not unusual to see 6-10in of snow where I'm at. I currently have an 07 outback so I know the AWD sedan chassis can handle it, and unfortunately I need a little bit more presence than the gt86/brz or mx5 have on offer

    • Also have you ever seen a Volvo pulled over by the fun ruiners with the flashy lights?

  • Hey Dan! If the maintenance has been done in a Volvo dealership and the car looks good, I would go for it. Considering the age and the low mileage the next service may require some extra checks on the engine, accessories belt for example. But suspension should be OK, maybe disks to change. My V70 did 200'000 km with nearly no issue apart from a turbo hose and the battery.

    • I know most of the maintenance has been done by a Volvo dealership from the service records. I have an official test drive this afternoon, so I'll be able to look more closely at it. Had my dad test drive it the other day, but he's rather rough on...

  • I hade a brief experience with a 2.4 diesel one. It was a midlife (2004) 163 PS automatic, FWD.

Fabulous, nice-sounding diesel, comfortable, bulletproof car. I used it for a 1.000 km trip to Prague and back - 5 people, averaging highway speeds (100-150 kph) and it only asked around 6.5 - 7 liters of diesel of me. Yet, quite punchy car, considering the displacement and torque of the 5pot diesel.

    Downsides:

    - cramped inside, even less space than Bimmers

    - boot is a deep hole with a small opening, that you struggle to put a simple suitcase in

    - pretty plastic(y) inside, considering the segment it is aiming for

    - I had a 5speed auto - eventhough I like a good torque automatic for a long trip, this old unit was a mess, slow shifting, hesitant, jerky old gearbox, that is expensive to maintain and proved to be unreliable (now I don't know if petrol ones use the same unit as D5s)

Overall - besides the gearbox, very good car.

  • I bought my wife a 2014 D4 xc60 new

We had the car just over 6 years and it was served once a year at our Volvo dealership

When we traded the car or her xc90 we had done 98,500 miles

It’s the best most reliable car I’ve owned

In all the time all I had to do was change the brake pads twice and put tyres on it

It was driving as good the day we left it behind as it was the day we collected it new.

If you want to know any more just ask

I hope you get the car and enjoy it for the time you own it.
